  1. Good but ….I really prefer problems which ask for the next move (e.g. see Ray Cheng’s Practical Exercises), where the next move could be the start of a mating sequence, or simply an improvement on one’s current position.

    If you say “mate in 3″ , the “mating” instruction helps you solve the problem! Ray Cheng simply says “it is your move” and you have to first work out “what is the problem or challenge here?”. Then second, having established the problem, make the best move which is the solution. Cheng’s approach is much more realistic, and like real Chess.
